Symptoms of Fuel Filter or Fuel Pump Problems

Last month, the check engine light came on. However, my car didn't leak, stall, or present any noticeable problems. I kept driving it and about 4 weeks later, the light went off. Now I'm noticing a problem. When driving on an incline, and accelerating, my car seems to choke or cough. Eventually, when I get to about 45-50 mph, it evens back out. Otherwise, my car is running fine for a 10 year old car. Do you think this is a fuel problem? If so, fuel pump or fuel filter? Limited funds, so I need to know if this a less than $200 repair or a more than $200 repair.
