What would cause the oil pressure to do drop so that it would cause problems for the engine.

oil pump going bad, not pumping enough pressure. blocked oil passages, not allowing engine to be oiled properly. Just plain old engine wear, gape between bearings to big for oil to fill the void. Also leaking or bad pressure sensor.
