while I was towing a trailer the xterra temp gauge would go up but never into the red. but as I would sit at idle it would go back down into the normal range and didn't overheat after I dropped the trailer off

Hello, it is possible that the trailer put additional strain on the engine which raised the operating temperature a bit. I would ensure that the trailer weight did not exceed the gross vehicle combination weight rating of the vehicle / towing capacity, and of course ensure that the cooling system is operating as designed; cooling fans turn on, air flow is good through the radiator.
