Is it common for the fuel sensor to go out on a vehicle that is 3 years old and how hard is it to change.

Yes, mine went bad. I ordered the parts from mynissanparts.com and had local mech. put it in for $125.
Is not very common for it to go bad and in order to change it you have to remove the fuel tank the sensor is actually a float attach to the fuel pump i don't think you can just buy the float i think you have to change the whole pump.
I have a 2006 Xterra and last month the Service Engine Soon light came on indicating the Fuel Level Sensor was bad. The dealer ran a diagnostic and confirmed it was the problem. They quoted me $300+ to fix it. The fuel gauge still works properly so they just cleared the code for me and recommended I not worry about it.
I think this is more common than it should be, and Nissan should have had a recall on this part. We have 2 Xterra's a 2005 and 2006 and BOTH had the fuel sensor go out right around 60K.
I don't know the answer but I think not. I had three fuel filters replace and now my car is not under warranty and its happening for the fourth time.
