engine shut down and will not start. nothing. few minutes later starts right up

engine shut down while waiting for light to turn green. Car would not start up again, no lights on dash board and not a sound from the engine. Nothing. Few minutes later starts right up. This has been happening over the last few days. Mechanic could not find the problem and car still not drivable. Help!
