What is your question?
I hav been having my truck servied by the dealer for the past 6 years since I have had it. I have been adhering to the maintenance schedule on a quarterly basis and I have not had to have any major repairs. I was last at my dealership in Ramsey, NJ in 05/09 at which time I had an oil change and other things done totaling $500.00 I have now been advised that I need my timing belt "adjusted/rest" which will take all day (8 hours) and cost $995.95. In addition, I have been told that I also need to have my water pump "servied" in conjuction with the timing belt which will cost $1549.00 by itself. I need front struts and links done at $767.50; rear shocks at $416.50 and a wheel alignment at $100.00 All of these "repairs" are suggested to be done simulataneously which average of $3,000.00. I have never trusted mechanics in the past because I have had numerous bad situations. How do I know if these things are absolutely necessary at this time or just a way to make $$$ for the dealer. Most people do not got to dealers because of the cost. I want to go to someone who is ASE certified but competent and not exbortitantly expensive. I have looked t you list for shops but most of them are dealers and if they are independent how do I know if they are full service and competent to perform the suggested repairs. They also suuggested that I will need a fuel injection and engine flush and other "minor" repairs. I do not see any of these things listed in my owner's manual as needing to be cone and if so when ideally it should be. I valuse my vehicle and cannot affor any major expensive repairs and I have limited my driving to local no more than 30 mile round trip. Any suggested for second and third opinions from COMPETENT, HONEST INDEPENDENT ASE CERTIFIED MECHANICS in my area of within a 20 mile radius. I AM NOT INTERESTED IN TAKING MY VEHICLE INTO NYC WHATSOEVER. I PREFER (BERGEN COUNTY) NJ. Thanks.

You've got good cause to be skeptical of this huge repair bill, and if you are uneasy, the best thing to do is to get a second opinion. A good independent shop could help. If you don't see what you want in the RepairPal directory, try the directory of ASA members and also the ASE. You can find their member lists through their websites: www.asashop.org and www.ase.com You can also try the shop directory at www.iatn.net
You need to find an honest shop & avoid going back to this rip off dealership. I just checked the labor time in a labor estimating guide that most independent repair shops use to estimate the labor to replace your timing belt, it gives 3.5 hours to do this job. the timing belt kit is only $115.25, the water pump is only $76.35 for a NEW water pump. This does NOT add up to the ridiculous price that they have quoted!!! Many shops are slow right now & are padding the tickets to pad their pay checks, selling unneeded & unwanted repairs in an effort to make more profits. My best advice to you is find an independently owned & operated shop, one that does NOT pay on a commission basis, get a re pour with the shop owner & above all...........one that can be trusted!! Ask for references from other people that have used this shop, call them & talk with them...........be wise & stop wasting your money with a shop that has you listed as "money bags"!!
