I'm having a intermittent problem with my xterra occassionally shifting into first gear. It's odd I'll drive and sometimes it will not shift into first, I'll cut the car off and it will correct the problem. The codes are Trans shift solenoid B and also Speed Sensor. A week ago I fond my vehicle running in "limp mode" but corrected that problem. The engine wiring harness came loose and burned and seared a couple of wires. One was a trans wire but corrected the limp mode. So any help would be appreciated and thanks.

Good catch on finding the burned wires. I hate using a flushing machine on older transmissions I have seen cases where sludge that was in the transmission had got dislodged stuck else where in the transmission. I would drive it get the oil hot, drain oil remove oil pan change oil and filter in the trans, add a product called Lubegaurd. A professional grade scan tool with Nissan capabilities can read in live sensor data can read if the solenoids are being operated and if the transmission controls are operating correctly. Don't know if you have a good workshop manual There is a company that independent auto repair shops get their information from, this same information is available inexpensively for people that work on their own cars.. The information is year make and model specific, covering repair procedures, torque specifications, fluid capacities and specifications, service bulletins, component locations, wiring diagrams ect.... Both the speed sensor and a shift solenoid can cause the problem. After repairing the wires did you rescan the vehicle and reset the ECM/TCM and see if any of the codes returned? A malfunctioning speed sensor can cause erratic shifting or for that matter, a no shift condition. A malfunctioning shift solenoid will cause a no shift problem. In either case your problem appears to be electrical based on the information you have supplied.
