It is built into the distributor. Nissan distributors have a tendency for the bearing to fail - and the metal gets slung into the wheel the the cam sensor reads. The easiest solution is to replace the distributor, although bearing replacement is possible.
How lucky can I be.. The car had over 205,000 miles before it failed. So now I get to look for a replacement distributor. Do you recommend any from a salvage yard or refurbished?
Reman or new would be what I would do. It's a common enough problem that you might find one in the same failed condition if you tried a used/recycled one.
