Why does a sudden shake occur when I'm stopped at a red light

my car drives smoothly but whenever I stop at a red light I randomly feel a single violent shake from my car almost as if my car has been rear-ended. The shaking does not occur continuously rather it's one big hit and seems to only occur while I'm stopped in drive.

What makes this problem better or worse?
