Why is my gas mileage and meter going up and down?

When i put gas in my car this morning the meter continued to stay on e. let it rest while at work and came back out it was at half a tank. turned it on and the miles started to decrease drastically and then went back up.

How long has your 2017 Nissan Sentra had this problem?
