A/C went from intermittent hot/cold to hot only after air cabin filter change

Car cooled fine on low temp days and intermittently on hotter days. Or at least it was more blatantly obvious on hot days.
I replaced the air cabin filter and bought a can of refrigerant with gauge. I had it serviced recently at the place I bought it and suspected they over charged it. It was intermittent before they serviced it and afterwards it still was. I have to drop it off with them, which is inconvenient so I thought I'd see if I could handle it.
I put the gauge on and it went straight to red with A/C on max. I put the gauge on without the can to release some pressure. I got it down to the green. Now it blows straight hot air only and the pipes aren't cold under the hood. Gauge is green with ac on, red with ac off. Seems like compressor is working.
Thoughts?
