High idling

If its at around 2000 rpm at 40mph in an automatic, that sounds normal. Depending on how quick you want to get up to speed, its been my experience, automatic shifting occurs 3200-6000 rpm. If it is causing you great stress or worry, double check with your mechanic and make sure you are up to date on your maintenance schedule, especially for the drivetrain.
