How do i know if my timing chain broke?

My car overheated and died while I was driving. I filled it up with coolant and when i went to start it, the engine sounded different then normal. It sounded like a weaker start; not slower but weaker. It doesn't sound like it usually sounds when I start the car. I was told that the top half of the engine wasn't turning with the bottom half of the engine, cause the timing chain either broke or jumped timing. To me it sounds like there is no spark, like the engine is rotating but there I nothing going to or from the spark plugs.
