What is your question?
The AC only works with MAX selected. The AC produces cold air and blows normally in MAX, but will quit altogether when dialed back to the normal settings. When I rotate the knob to the normal vent setting required for AC and push the center button nothing happens. When I rotate the vent control to the MAX setting, everything works as normal. The AC light comes on as well as the recirculation light on the fan switch. That's all normal in MAX. When I turn the vent switch back to a setting that would give normal AC, the AC light goes out, and will just blow ambient air. The heater and defroster are crappy, but they've always been crappy.

Hello, it certainly sounds like a concern within the climate control system. Keep in mind that "MAX" will close the doors to outside air and recirculate inside air to keep the cold getting colder. Perhaps it's a concern with the allowance of outside air to be introduced with the AC on? It'll take some hands on testing with proper diagnostic equipment and workshop manuals for reference to figure out what's going on.
