Do I need the master key to open the door or will a duplicate metal key work?

I don't like hiding the key outside the car. I want to hide the master key inside the locked car while I surf and carry a duplicate metal key in my wetsuit to open the door when I return. If I have the hardware store cut me a duplicate metal key, will I be able to use it to open my door?
What makes this problem better or worse?
If a duplicate key from the hardware store would could open the door.
