Spedometer intermittently not working

Comes and goes, also bounces between 0-actual speed. Sometimes on for while sometimes off for a while...also comes back on randomly after not working.. 174,000 miles

What makes this problem better or worse?

Maybe heat as it's Summertime

How long has your 2001 Nissan Quest had this problem?

8 months or so but is more common lately and also the duration not working is increasing.
