What is your question?
The dealership is telling me that my 05 Pathfinder needs a new timing chain.. I thought timing chains were supposed to last much longer than belts. How do I know if the dealership is just trying to oversell me? They are quoting the repair to be over $1500. It make's a slight whining noise but it has done that for the last 50,000 miles and this is the first time they have mentioned it. Help!

There is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) from Nissan regarding this problem, and the chain and tensioners will need to be replaced to address the noise (if it is the same noise!) This is not a recall, so they will not pay for it, but since it points out a known issue, you may be able to negotiate a shared cost of this repair with Nissan. It's worth a try. Bulletin Info: TSB #NTB07-042 IF YOU CONFIRM: There is a buzzing / whining noise coming from one or both secondary timing chain / camshaft sprocket areas. The noise may increase with engine speed (RPM). ACTION: Replace both secondary timing chains and both secondary timing chain tensioners with the ones from the Parts Information section of this bulletin. Change the engine oil and filter.
what i do with my 2004 nissan pathfinder is take it to 3 different shops and if the all have the same answer then fix it but if not take the cheapest 1
I just learned today my 2005 Pathfinder whining noise is a timing chain tensioner. And like Bret said Nissan knows about it thus the TSB they generated. Here is the hook, Nissan will repair at no cost providing the the factory power train warranty has not exceeded 60,000 miles or 5 years. ( yep, its too late) So I am going to call corporate and plead my case. The key is to remind them they knew about it and did not send out a notification to educate owners. Good luck
Did you have any luck? I'm having the same issue
Hi Bret. I just had over $1100 worth of work done on my 2007 Pathfinder regarding this issue. I am at 66k miles and they told me that if it had been caught at earlier, they could have taken care of it at no cost. My problem is, i took my vehicle in at 50823 miles because it was acting weird. If i was at a high speed and i would let my foot off the gas it would sound as if the engine was still reved up for a couple seconds. It kind of seemed like it was taking a couple of seconds for the gears to kick in, if that makes any sense... There was also a high pitched sound the car would make when i would turn it on that would be loud at first but would quiet down but would get lout again once i stepped on the gas. I asked Nissan about that and they told me that it was not the same thing. I am getting ready to call the corporate office and wanted to see if you could tell me if you think this is what the problem was at 58k miles. Thanks for your help. druiznaz@yahoo.com
