What is your question?
I can tell my Pathinder is overheating but the guage doesn’t indicate anything out of the ordinary. I can feel it, smell, hear it...it’s Hot! Could it be Hot on the backside and not circulating coolant/water so the temperature sensor isn’t detecting a problem?
What makes this problem better or worse?
Turn it off makes it better. Driving makes it worse.
How long has your 1998 Nissan Pathfinder had this problem?

If you feel it, smell it and hear it -- maybe it's leaking somewhere -- even a little? Have you had the cooling system pressure tested yet? Do that before anything else. Certainly the temperature of the engine should be measured for real, with a diagnostic tool first -- seeing what the engine coolant temperature sensor is reading, and then even with some kind of thermal gun to check temperature at a distance physically, to get a sense of how close it is to reality. The gauge may or may not be working properly, so it's really hard to know until you can assess all the facts. www.repairpal.com/repair-shops
