While driving car will stop accelerating , i have to let go off the accelerator and press the the pedal again then itvwill accelerate. I have 140000 miles on it. What is wrong?

2013 Nissan Maxima 140, 000 miles. Today i ve encountered the issue where I was on the freeway and after i accelerated to 40 it wouldnt go further but the rpm did. I thought it was because of the rain and maybe the water beneath it didnt give traction. I exited the freeway and turned off car. I proceeded to turn car on and drive. At 20 mph the car didnt accelerate , I let go of the gas and press the gas again and I was able to accelerate. But the issue occured over and over again when going from 0 to whatever mph it decided . I kept on with gas release press gas again to make it home.
