I put transmission in either reverse or drive it makes a whining or whirring noise

Yes the car moves. As a matter of fact once I start to drive the sound disappears. It preforms normally above 40 mph. However it does whine some at speeds 35 mph and lower after car reaches 40 mph. The fluid is brown and at proper level.
