how to check auto trans fluid. cannot find dipstick or reservoir

There is a "fluid level gauge" per the shop manual. That said, you did not indicate which engine and if your vehicle is 2 or 4 wheel drive. My strong suggestion would be to visit a shop near you where they can help you check the fluid very likely without charge. I do not suspect fluid level is related to your concern.
