While replacing the rear shocks, the thread on the upper shock snapped off. How can this be repaired?

Hi, I'm Bogi, one of the auto experts on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Great question, and that's definitely a frustrating situation to deal with! If the threaded portion of the new shock broke off, that is not something I would attempt to repair. The shocks play too crucial a role and bear too much load to risk attempting any sort of thread repair, and welding it would be dangerous and not likely to hold anyway. The safest option is to purchase a new shock, or see if they will warranty it where you initially purchased it from. If it was the old shock that the thread broke off… depending on where it broke, you should still be able to remove the nut and remove the old shock or you may end up needing to cut it off. Given the risks involved, this may be something you will want to have a trained technician do.
