The check engine light has came on several times before I had it hooked up to a machine and it said it was the catalytic converter never got it fixed and then out of nowhere the car started cutting out and the engine light started flashing

Hello, the engine light flashing is related to cylinder misfire. Interestingly enough, engine misfire often causes too much fuel to get into the exhaust system causing premature failure of the catalytic converters. I would not drive the vehicle further until the misfire and check engine light related concerns are resolved, because you could damage the new parts. Seek guidance from a shop near you for help diagnosing the concern with your engine performance. https://repairpal.com/auto-repair-near-me
Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Uh oh! It sounds like you have two things going on, but one can sometimes lead to the other! A Flashing check engine light often indicates a serious issue most likely a misfire. Misfires can damage the catalytic converter and may be the cause of the symptom. Most of the time spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel delivery are the main culprits. I'd advise not driving the Altima until this symptom is resolved. Altimas are known to have to have the matrices of the catalyst come apart, causing running issues so addressing this promptly will prevent further damage and ensure safe driving. Good luck and be safe! If you have any other questions feel free to call us at 877-913-1554! We'll gladly find you a certified RepairPal shop in your area!
