Gas cap door.

These doors normally have some type of spring that pops the door open when the latch is opened. It sounds like the latch is working but maybe the spring is not? Try having someone depress the release lever and pull open the door, see if it opens. If it does, then inspect the spring and the latch, see if everything looks ok.
