RPM's seem to be overaccelerating

I have a standard 99 Nissan Altima and recently when Im at a stop and shift gears it seems slow to move and RPM's high when shifting up to 4 or 5 RPMS on their own even when I press very little on gas. There are no check engine lights or any other lights on. It doesn't seem like its the clutch to me because all this happens when I press on the gas. Hopefully I've described the problem I am a woman and just don't want to get fleeced by a mechanic. Thank you very much for any help provided in advance.
