When you just use your finger to turn the switch on and off does it work? It should work this way. If it does not, you may have gotten a defective switch, it can happen. Good Luck! Some times there is a little rubber bumper or pad that goes on to the brake pedal arm that activates the switch. It is a very common problem for this rubber part to wear out and then fall off on Corollas. Nissan is a very similar design. You could possibly just make one or get one from Nissan. I find it fun to 'fabricate' my own little parts. Best of Luck and I am here if you need more help.

yes! thank you dandd, you are right I pulled the switch out and pressed it down with my finger and the brake lights turned off. the strange thing is that I ajusted the switch as far as it would go. I guess the contact spot on the brake pedal has worn down or shifted in some way. I've tried pulling the pedal up but the light still stays on. so I'm going to atach something to the brake pedal to make up the difference.thanks again.-primer

Dear Primer, On many cars there is a little rubber bumper pad that attaches to the metal brake lever that helps close the brake light switch. I have seen this part wear out and fall off and cause brake light problems, I have made my own little part, in many cases. It is usually not a high tech issue.

THE PLUNGER ON THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH NEEDS SOMETHING TO PUSH IT IN.THE STOPPED HAS BROKEN. I RECOMMAND A PENNY TAPED TO THE BRACKET THAT HOLDS IT.
