Rear differential and alternator light comes on with lose of drive power

I could be going down the freeway and both lights come on and I have no power from the transmission. I let off the gas and both lights go off. I tried resetting the computer by disconnecting the battery and it seemed to work for a couple of weeks. The transmission seems to work fine. Prior to this a couple of times in the 9 years I've had it when coming out of reverse into drive - no power. I had to turn off the engine and restart. Currently 220,000 miles with many new parts on the engine
