if my car starts in park when i give it gas but once i shift to drive it cuts off and will not drive , what could possibly be the problem?

I didn't hear any noise and today was the first time it happened. It started fine , I stopped at a red light it shook a little and cut off, I tried starting it / it would crank up but not turn over . I placed it in park and pressed the gas pedal it would start and stay on until I placed it drive then it cut off again and would not stay on.
