car was out of gas, replenished the tank, now it wont start or release the key. it doesn't even try to turn over.

Sounds like the battery may have been run down. Try to test and charge your battery. If it is fully charged and tests good, check the rest of your electrical system - starter, etc. Sounds like an electrical issue.
