I took into the emission test center. The tech wouldn't listen to me and put it on dynameter to test. As soon as the test was complete and he turned it off, it died and wouldn't start up. We had to push it out of the station. Waited 20 minutes and it started, so I got home. But now it turns over, but won't stay running.

I wouldn't guess at an engine control module. Carry out a test to see if you are losing fuel or spark. I would guess one of those is missing, and then you can drill down to what component is failing to cause the problem you are having.
If it is the vr4 it should be awd preventing most staions from being able to do a rolling test but rather require them to do a two speed idle test. As far as it not restarting i agree with dave as it is probably something causing loss of spark or fuel. Do you get any security lights or check engine light when it fails to start?
