My 1998 mercury villager started the day it was delivered to me and I let the engine run for about 30 mins before switchoff. Thereafter it cranks but will not start, despite changing plugs, plug wires fuel filter and distributor cover. The fuel pump cutoff switch is checked and is not activated. What could be the problem?

The fuel pump is inside the fuel tank. You must empty the fuel out and drop the fuel tank to gain access. These models were somewhat prone to faulty check valves in the pumps, but this was 20 years ago. All that to say, if there is no fuel pressure at the engine, that's the first place to check.
