How do I get the key into the lock position once the car is turned off.

Hello, it sounds like you may have a worn key or lock cylinder. Hard to say for sure. Move the shift lever back and forth to ensure it locks into the park position also. If the shift interlock is malfunctioning, this could cause an issue getting the key to the lock position to be removed.
