Started car in 30 degree wheather and made loud rattling noise. was told it was barings in compressor and need new a/c compr & clutch kit. Has the cold weather caused this [problem? Never had noise before.A/c was not on at the time.What do you think is the problem?

the compressor clutch or bearing can cause this noise, sounds like a tinny rattle noise. you can repair the compressor of the rest of the unit is still in fine shape, but with the added labor and parts prices, sometimes unit replacement is more cost effective. the weather didn't really have a large effect on the failure. cold weather is much harder on all mechanical systems, but not the largest factor here.
Yes cold weather will bring out bearing problems. Cold contracts heat expands. I live in Florida. You should replace the compressor, accumulator and orifice tube. Furthermore when the system is evacuated it should pull a vacumm for at least 30 to 45 minutes. I let the vac pump run for at least 1 hour. Air and mositure can cause a lot of problems. Csgaston, A/C is not a luxury in Florida. It is a nescessity. Of course you woudn't agree right now. Lehigh Acres, Fl. was at 28 degrees this morning.
