Fords have this issue, The switch is in with the lock on the inside fo the door. You might try with door open and holding the outside handle open, spraying some wd40 in the door lock area, and take a screw driver to move the lock back and fourth, repeat this a few times. 80% of the time this will fix it. Usually it is dirt/dust build up giving a bad signal, so doing this trick cleans it away.

I had same problem and found it was caused by running the car thru a high power car wash, it caused a short in the switch. I now wash it by hand and the problem stopped.
