Why is my 02 mercury mountaineer v8 OD OFF light flashes shifting hard

02 mercury mountaineer V8 and my OD Off Light flashes and it stays on all the time and it shifts really hard in all the gears? But no check engine light is on? But when I start it and put it in reverse the OD OFF light goes off but it come right bck on when I put it in drive?

What makes this problem better or worse?

Nothing makes it worse or better.. the OD OFF light flashing and stays on theres no check engine light or anything and it shifts very hard in all the gear.. but my OD OFF light goes off when I put it in reverse but as soon and I put in drive it comes right bck on...
