What is your question?
Recently my Montego would turn over but not start. Had it towed on a flatbed to Lincoln/Mercury dealer thinking it was the fuel pump. Turns out it was the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) which I was told was under recall so there was no charge. What is the PCM, where is it and what is its function?
What makes this problem better or worse?
Lincoln/Mercury dealer/garage replaced it when engine would turn over but not staart and smelled of fuel. Thought it might be the fuel pump but dealer replaced PCM which was a recall, but I wanted to know more about it.

Hello, The powertrain control module (PCM) is a compact computer that monitors and controls all of the functions of the engine, and sometimes the transmission. On older vehicles, there is no PCM because everything is controlled by an electrical switch or mechanical device. These devices called for excessive maintenance, were difficult to keep in good condition, and had poor emission control. Using a computerized monitoring and control system alleviates all of those issues, as well as offering more functionality and diagnostic aids. In order to computerize these systems, the PCM is pre-programmed with a sets of acceptable values, fault conditions, and actions to take according to values that are preset. Good thing that the recall was in effect, they can cost a pretty penny to replace.
