What is your question?
To start the car you have to push in and turn it a very odd way.. most garages I’ve taken it to for oil changes have to come get me to start it. So this had gone on before for about 4 months.. then completely stopped starting at all. One technician suggested I try my spare key. That worked!! Now my spare key is slowly starting to fail me.. I only switched 2 months ago. So it’s happening a lot faster this time around.
What makes this problem better or worse?
New key made it better for a while
How long has your 2008 Mercury Mariner had this problem?
6 months

This is exactly my problem. No mechanic can figure it out / told me to go to dealer. Dealer wasn't sure either. They can't turn the key / but there is an odd way it actually works by pressing harder and turning it past the normal line. Usually I have to do this several times and it will eventually catch. I'm getting tired of them telling me they can't figure it out. I am thinking about junking the car.
The ignition is worn out. You can fix this issue with tape. Take ignition out look at end that goes into collum. There should be a half round piece at the end. This is what turns the ignition to start. Take a piece of electrical tape and wrap the end 1 and a half times and trim the excess off the end. When you place it back in the collum it should be snug, not too loose or tight. This should hold a while until you get creative with different tapes and glues to hold better. Summer time will loosen the tape but this is a much cheaper fix then having to buy a new ignition every year. God bless
