Check engine light came on. Codes P0171 & P0174 came up. We are changing fuel filter first to see if this fixed the problem.

Remove fuel pump fuse (under hood) crank engine over a few times to relieve fuel pressure - some residual pressure will still be present. Note: some techs do not relieve pressure - just disconnect filter using shop towels - drain pan. However that method should be left to the professionals.
Side note: you more than likely have a concern in the engine compartment related to a possible air intake leak or even a mass air flow sensor concern. Diagnostic testing is required. Sure, a fuel filter in theory could be restricting fuel flow, but in my experience this is a very low percentage shot. Good luck. Still, fuel filters should be changed every 30,000 miles on these vehicles.
Yes - definitely go ahead with the fuel filter replacement - nothing will be lost there! Of course more diagnostic testing may be necessary. Good luck!
