Transaxle malfunction

I had jerky shifting and it doesn't engage in any gear, it's as if it's frozen. The color of the fluid is almost a brick red color. When we moved it originally it we got about 1/4 of a mile and then it wouldn't go forward anymore, we had to tow it.
