What is your question?
If the compressor or condenser on the a/c unit in my 1996 mercury cougar are bad will it hold refrigerant and blow cold air? Will it even blow cold air? There are no noises. The idle does not change when it's on. it's always been maintained and very clean. about 100,000 miles. I was told there were some leaks at seals and 2 hoses needed to be changed. We filled the freon and it blows cold just fine. It lasts for a couple of weeks. But I wanted it checked, the mechanic gave me an estimate to repair and he said the compressor and condenser had to be replaced, cost would be over $2100,00. Because it's so old the parts were hard to get and it would take 1/2 day to do the job. Does that sound right? Thank You
What makes this problem better or worse?
Better with freon added. Worse about 2 weeks of use.
How long has your 1996 Mercury Cougar had this problem?
2-3 weeks

Why are you replacing pars if you have cold air? Seals and hoses - yeah, may be required -- and if the compressor seal is leaking, you will indeed need to rebuild or more likely replace it. The condenser - is there evidence of leaks? Has dye been added to the system to detect leaks?
