When is it necessary to have this done, car has 75,000 miles. Dealer is requesting this to be done and it costs $400.00.

Mercedes lists 39,000 miles for the transmission service interval. The flush is a local MB dealer "idea"; the factory says to replace the fluid, the filter and pan gasket. Either way is within $50 of the other except that Brumos is not replacing the filter, like mother says you should. Have them explain why they don't perform this service as the factory says it's supposed to be done.....
This is a very specialized procedure and should only be done by an experienced MB master tech. New aluminum pan bolts, a fleece tranny filter, and the special Benz oil MUST be used! No bullshit here, or start saving for a $10.000 new trans. If you can not afford a R-350 and it's very fussy and complex tranny's maintenance requirements, then you need to go trade if for a simple car. These trannies are closed and sealed, and many cheap assed secondary owners learn to reset the service lights and forget the 4-matic has more moving parts per surface area than a learjet engine. Heat and all kinds of things gum up the ports and trash the gearboxes. I spend $500 every 50.000 miles on keeping this tranny cool and well coated with the premium lubricants. It has 234k and has a clean record. BTW the R-350 was a huge financial flop in the USA and sold at a loss, China and the middle east made up for the refusal of Americans balking at this strange looking vehicle. The R-350 is now history, no longer made as of last year.
