red beeping break lights. told to ignore. today breaks felt soft. hard to stop

about 9 mo ago told breaks ok ignore sensor light. sometimes message goes from black to beeping red. telling me to go to shop. today loud beeping and breaks were mushy and felt like it was not grabbing/stopping. car stalled. 150K miles on it. Had to restart engine then it drove ok. (but I went slow). why does light stay on? also door locks not responding to key half the time. worried about breaks but $$$ to ask dealer. can I replace switch to turn off lights DIY? easy? impossible? thx... ps I am a lady not a mechanic.
