My dash display (where the temp/redio stations etc are displayed) has gone red

If you have a large red warning in the cluster where your speedometer is then there is a fault. This red screen usually comes with a written warning so if it's saying battery that could mean the battery is not being charged. You could have an alternator or regualator issue.
