My car has 77000 miles; how much is considered acceptable oil consumption?

Most manufacturers state up to a quart every 1000 miles is normal consumption. There are other factors though. Stop and go traffic, and lots of load (jumping on the freeway, hills, etc.) when the engine is cold can increase the consumption. If there's concern, having a shop or dealer perform a consumption test would be a good idea.
