steering will adjust to up and down or telescoping wont work

i went to mercedes benz .dealer and my technician told me to replace the ten dollar part is very costly. i don't know the specific name of the parts but i told them that my steering wheel won't go up or down when i set in and out of the car. no particular noise just does not work.

How long has your 2005 Mercedes-Benz E500 had this problem?

almost a year coz i wont pay almost $500. for a ten dollar parts
