LoJack sent me message low battery 11.7 v did obd at home engine off 12.4 running 14.5 alternator 14.84 smell when engine off kind of dirty grime nothing on dashboard showing can you check 82,200 miles some noise when running
What makes this problem better or worse?

Hello, Dave here, contributing to RepairPal and providing expert advice since 2010. "Low battery" would indicate just that, a battery that is below the proper voltage level for the vehicle. Battery should not be less than 12.5 V at the minimum. Voltage is just half of the equation though; amperage matters also. The alternator reference voltage may be 14.5 while running at 2,000 RPM engine speed, but amperage could be low or non-existent - which can be evidence of a failed alternator diode.
