emissions system issue

Engine light on a few months back; code said charcoal evap cannister bad- replaced by MB dealer, Memphis. At that visit, service rep explained that another light came on - now it needed a secondary air pump. I couldn't do that then but have recently had that replaced as well. The light is back on and I'm around $1200.00 worse off. The only symptom that has ever been is when I got gas at first, the car wouldn't start back for about an hour. Now I get gas with the engine running...while pumping gas, the engine runs like sputtering maybe, with a great smell. I've read as much as I can understand. Any info would be appreciated. Sam G.
