What is the box under the back seat beside the battery and fuse box?

It started smoking and it smelled real funny. There was standing water after a big rain back there. First the lights stayed on, and the alarm horn started going off. We pulled the fuses, but then the battery went bad. Bought a new battery the that box started smoking before we could take it to get it repaired. The horn had stopped so we thought we had lucked up and things were drying out. We were wrong, it went off again and let us know the box was smoking.(thank goodness)But the lights were still staying on. We thought we had shorted the fuse box. Now we know whatever that box is is burned out also. Please help me. How much do you think this is going to cost? The box has MRL SRU on it with a what looks like a screw on top with PP T40 on it. It has some wires coming from it also. Thank you for your help.
