What is your question?
My E320's A/C system compressor burned out. The mechanic is telling me that the compressor burned out, and because of that, the engine shuts off when the A/C system is turned on. He's telling me that I'm going to have to replace the entire A/C system, instead of just the compressor (which doesn't sound right). Compressors online start around 400 bucks, so why would I need to pay around $1800, his first rough estimate?

When a compressor locks up like that, it tends to spread metal debris all over the internals of the AC system. If you just replace the compressor, then the metal will work it's way into it, and destroy it. Compressor warrantys take this into consideration, and will require your service receipt to show at least a new accumulator, orifice tube/expansion valve, and a possibly a system flush and filter installation. The evaporator core, lines, and condenser can also be contaminated, as well. If you add all those parts together, plus the labor for thier installation, and the AC system recovery, evacuation, and recharge, then 1800.00 is really a pretty good first estimate.
It is not nescessary to replace the whole system if you could just clean the whole system by cleaning of gasoline or a freon 11 if I"m not mistaken, and blow it up by compressor, thats the best economical way
I second devilscap4's excellent answer! A pro would never replace only the compressor because he knows it will be damaged again by debris unless he performs the necessary steps. I'd only add that real shops and mechanics won't buy their parts for online for various reasons and most won't install those either. They buy parts from a reliable source who stands behind their product in case of warranty. For a good shop reliability as much important as it is for their client and they would not sacrifice it for cheap parts from unknown sources. We would never install a part supplied by a client - unless there is no way for us to get it, but we proudly stand behind our services with warranty, and yes, we will be still here tomorrow as we are here in 14 years - meanwhile online sources comes and goes. That's how business works. A brand new OE compressor retail price is about $850 not 400, so yes, you will get a very good deal. Zee
