the car does not make any noise or show any signs of problems but the engine light came on and mechanic tells me i need new relay and air pump. The car has 180,000 miles.

I agree with TLC, though manufacturer recommends to replace the two parts in pairs. Secondary air injection pumps on MB are very common and also an easy diagnosis, so if you have developed a good relationship with the facility than let them take care of it so you don't have to replace parts twice.
Often the car's computer will pick up on a problem before you notice any symptoms. If you trust the mechanic & he warranties the work, I would follow the advice. (btw, I encourage anyone to develop a relationship with a local mechanic / shop that you can trust. Most of us are the good guys, & will go the extra mile to treat our regular customers well

The relay would be the less expensive of the 2, so if the diagnostic time spent to find out which one is the source of the problem is more than the cost of the relay, just go for the relay 1st. But keep in mind, it may need both parts.
